Second phase of Ontario Highway 407 expansion opens east of Toronto

The 9.6-kilometre extension aims to alleviate gridlock on Highway 401 and improve traffic flow throughout the GTA
CLARINGTON, Ont.—A new 9.6-kilometre segment of Ontario Highway 407 has opened northeast of Toronto.
The latest extension of the toll road adds two interchanges between Harmony Road in Oshawa and Taunton Road in Clarington, Ont.—building on the first phase of the multibillion-dollar project that opened last spring.
The 407 East connects with the privately-held 407 ETR that runs through the Greater Toronto Area from Pickering to Burlington.
Though tolls on the new Ontario-owned segments of the 407 are lower than those on the original highway, which was privatized in 1999, drivers still need to pay to use the road.
Work on the third and final phase of the 407 East expansion project is currently underway and will extend the road east to Highway 35/115 and add another high-speed north/south link between the 407 and southern Ontario’s main thoroughfare, Highway 401.
Crews expect to wrap up construction on the final stretch of road by 2020.
