NEW GLASGOW, N.S.—The company that owns the Nova Scotia railway where a train derailed Thursday evening says it is investigating the possibility of a mechanical problem as the cause.
Mario Brault, president of the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway, says the three-car derailment in downtown New Glasgow was minor and involved no injuries.
Brault says the cars were carrying steel plates and no hazardous materials were spilled in the incident, which occurred on a spur line running towards the town of Trenton.
He says the derailment was reported to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and Transport Canada.
The railway is owned by Genesee and Wyoming, the owner of short-line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium.
