Project receives funding from Natural Resources Canada
MONTREAL—Enerkem Inc. announced today it has secured $1.1 million in federal funding under Natural Resource Canada’s EcoEnergy Initiative to develop new catalytic processes for converting waste to drop-in biofuels.
Drop-in biofuels can be substituted for conventional fuels like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
“Enerkem’s core business is the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol, and we now intend to take advantage of our flexible technology platform to gradually expand our line of biofuels and chemical products,” said Vincent Chornet, president and CEO of Enerkem.
The company also produces methanol and other chemical intermediates.
Last year the company started production of cellulosic ethanol at its demonstration facility in Westbury, Que., and announced it will build commercial-scale biofuel plants in Edmonton, Varennes, Que., and Mississippi.
