MILTON, Ont.—An independent chicken processing company is planning major upgrades to its facility in Milton, Ont.

Sargent Farms, a longtime staple of the city west of Toronto, is investing $10 million to retrofit its processing plant. The project will not add any new floorspace at the site, but will see the company replace all of the plant’s ageing machinery with new equipment.

“We’re committed to making the investments needed to continue growing our operation, provide our customers the best possible products and help make our community a great place to live and work,” said vice-president Bob Sargent.

The investment is expected to increase output and efficiency at the Milton plant as well as secure 300 jobs. Sargent also operates a production facility in nearby Mississauga, Ont.

Aiming to minimize downtime, the company will perform most of the upgrades in off-hours. It expects the project to take about three years to complete.
