Two-speed core drill offers efficient way to drill, tap and twist

Metal fabrication just got faster and more efficient with the introduction of FEIN Canadian Power Tools’ new two-speed core drill.
The only two-speed core drill in its class, the JMU 137-2 QW is the smallest, most versatile and portable mag drill on the market, offering all the benefits of a drill press, but in a compact design.
“It really sets itself way ahead of the competition in its class,” says Randy McDonald, national product manager with FEIN Canadian Power Tool Company in Mississauga, Ont. “Our competitors offer tools in that capacity and maximum diameter, but none of them have a two-speed motor, they don’t have electronic speed control or reverse mode and they don’t have speed memory. These features really make the JMU 137 unique.”
The new tool is perfect for drilling applications because of its high speed. It’s also ideal for tapping because of its low speed. It has perfect power-to-weight ratio due to compact, weight-optimized construction, along with a FEIN high-performance motor with excellent speed and stability for reliable and efficient operation.
“It’s very versatile,” McDonald says. “Whether you’re using a high-speed steel cutter, a carbide tip cutter or a twist drill, you’re able to choose the appropriate speed for the cutting tool to achieve better cutting performance and optical tool life.”
The tool is suitable for use in tight spaces due to its compact, slim construction, and it can handle core drilling, twist drilling, tapping, countersinking and reaming. It has electronic speed control in both speeds, along with a speed memory and reverse.
The JMU core drills replace the KBM 32 Q, which was a single-speed machine. The new drills have a machine weight of 23 lbs — lighter than almost any other core drill. At the same time, they’re extremely powerful and durable, offering a stroke length of 10¼ inches (260 mm) for use with a chuck and twist drill.
“The old tool was really best suited for carbide tip cutters, not so much for high- speed steel,” McDonald explains. “But this tool, because you can change the speed, it’s suited for high speed steel cutters, carbide tip cutters and a range of applications.”
The powerful and versatile core drills reduce operator effort to a minimum, because no pre-drilling or retooling is necessary. The result is faster work progress, and feed pressure is also significantly reduced because the core drills work with a smaller cutting area.
