Gold mine shut down as search for worker, investigation take place

VANCOUVER—One worker was trapped underground at Goldcorp Inc.’s Marlin mine in western Guatemala early April 14 following an unexpected rock fall.

Currently reporting the employee as missing, the company said first responders were dispatched immediately and relevant officials notified.

“We are coordinating with first responders and the relevant authorities and will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident,” David Garofalo, Goldcorp’s president and CEO, said. “We are offering support to the individual’s family and employees at the mine site. The health and safety of our employees is our highest priority.”

The gold and silver mine is located 300 kilometres northwest of Guatemala City and employs approximately 3,300 workers. The mine’s operations are suspended while the search for the worker and the investigation take place.
