Contract option expands scope of work on Polar Epsilon 2 project
VANCOUVER—MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. has won a $15 million contract option to provide a space-based radar system for a soon-to-launch Canadian satellite program.
Awarded by the Department of National Defence (DND), the agreement expands the scope of a previously-disclosed $48.5 million deal for a maritime surveillance satellite system known as Polar Epsilon 2. With the contract option in place, the Canadian communications and aerospace firm will also provide the mission with space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capabilities.
Spearheaded by the Canadian Space Agency, Polar Epsilon 2 is part of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, which is expected to launch in 2018. It will provide daily surveillance data across millions of square miles of Canadian territory.
