The privately-owned food products company is turning the pork plant into a turkey processing plant

MARKHAM, Ont.—Sofina Foods Inc. is transitioning a recently acquired pork processing facility in in Mitchell, Ont. into a turkey processing operation.

Markham, Ont. based Sofina said that while there is no official start date, it anticipates commissioning the facility in late 2015.

The company did not disclose the value of the investment, or if it had provincial or federal government funding.

“The addition of the Mitchell facility is evolutionary to our current operations in Dublin, Ontario,” stated Jeff McDowell, vice-president for the poultry value chain at Sofina Foods. “The Mitchell facility provides Sofina Foods with the ability to provide fresh turkey to our further processing operations in London, Ont. and Brampton, Ont., and confirms our commitment to the Ontario turkey industry, and Ontario turkey farmers.”

McDowell said this is the “largest single investment in the Canadian turkey industry in over 25 years.”

Sofina Foods Inc. is a privately-owned Canadian primary and processed food products company that operates 17 manufacturing facilities in Canada, three hatcheries and has about 4,800 employees.
