Manufacturer tops PROFIT Hot 50

TORONTO: Much has been made of the challenging economic environment for manufacturers over the last year. But for at least five manufacturing companies, 2010 has been a banner year.
In fact, the revenues from these firms were strong enough to land them on one of Canada’s most high-profile lists, the PROFIT Hot 50.
Unveiled today, the companies on the PROFIT Hot 50 ranking of Canada’s emerging growth companies have achieved an average revenue growth of 548 per cent over the past two years.
Great Circle Works Inc., (GCW) an Oakville, Ont. based manufacturer of winter toys—namely the amazing Zipfy Freestyle Mini Luge—sits at the very top of the list.
GCW posted a staggering revenue growth of 2,277 per cent in 2010 while selling its 350,000th sled.
What’s their secret? PROFIT Magazine says Canada’s next generation of entrepreneurial bright lights has shown a keen eye for exploiting under-served niches, a willingness to take risks, a ruthless attention to cost control and, above all, a passionate commitment to delivering value to their customers.
Five manufacturers made the PROFIT Hot 50 list:
- Great Circle Works Inc. / Zipfy Inc., an Oakville, Ont., toy and sporting good manufacturer, has sold more than 350,000 Zipfy sleds. Ranked 1.
- Dynamysk Automation Ltd., in Calgary, Alta., designs and installs industrial-automation systems for facilities such as natural-gas plants and wellhead pipelines. Ranked 36.
- Westlake Industries Inc., in Burlington, Ont., provides prefabricated piping and pipe supports that were used in a new power plant in Brampton, Ont. Ranked 45.
- General Bio Energy (Clean Power Concepts Inc.), in Regina, Sask., turns canola seed into oils for animal feed, biodegradable plastic, lubricants, and other products. Ranked 40.
- GeoSource Energy Corp. from Kelowna, B.C., installs geoexchange heating and cooling systems. Ranked 42.
- Dynamysk Automation Ltd., in Calgary, Alta., designs and installs industrial-automation systems for facilities such as natural-gas plants and wellhead pipelines. Ranked 36.
