Automotive parts maker Magna International Inc. has donated 239 seats made with its FreeForm technology to the Michigan Science Center’s IMAX Dome Theatre.

The new seat installation, part of what Magna calls a commitment to promote STEM educational activities for metro Detroit youth, is currently underway and will open to the public in early 2022.

Introduced in 2019 for use in vehicles, FreeForm seats have highly concave surfaces and contours, and back panels that Magna says provide up to four inches of additional rear seat knee clearance. The seats are also said by Magna to be easier to clean because they feature simple construction with a seamless surface.

For the IMAX Dome Theatre application, Magna officials said its bioscience team made sure the seats were crafted especially for movie-viewing for all ages, “and with headrests that make looking up at the dome more comfortable.”

“Our automaker partners trust Magna to give families a comfortable and convenient experience in their vehicles with innovative seating solutions,” said John Wyskiel, president of Magna Seating, said in an Oct. 21 news release. “So naturally, we’re thrilled to bring our unique technology and product to the rebirth of a great Michigan institution like the Science Center’s Dome Theatre, and honoured to give the next generation of scientists, engineers, inventors and mathematicians the best seat in the house.”
