Move to close Montreal plant by early 2017 will affect 430 workers, according to Energizer
ST. LOUIS—Consumer goods maker Energizer Holdings Inc. plans to close its feminine hygiene products plant in Montreal by early 2017, affecting 430 workers.
The United States-based company says production will be consolidated at its facility in Delaware in phases, beginning next summer.
Energizer says the shutdown is part of its previously announced restructuring plan that will result in US$350 million in restructuring costs and US$300 million in total gross savings.
“This was a difficult but necessary decision to maintain the company’s position in this highly competitive business,” stated David Hatfield, president and chief operating officer of Energizer Personal Care.
Energizer’s personal care products operations make shaving systems, absorbant feminine care products, and sunscreen and infant products around the world for established brand names including Schick, Edge, Playtex, Hawaiian Tropic and Wet Ones.
Its household products division makes the Energizer and Eveready battery brands.
Energizer bought the Montreal plant from Johnson & Johnson in July 2013 in a US$185-million cash deal.
