Eliminate motion and inventory waste in manufacturing sites with Tork

As manufacturers strive for increased productivity through continuous improvement, they often find themselves in an eternal quest to find and eliminate waste in all parts of production, as there are always new discoveries to be made and unseen waste to be reduced.

To better understand how to improve manufacturing efficiency, Tork®, an Essity brand, conducted a study on where motion and inventory waste are most common in manufacturing sites. The research shows that:

  • 44 per cent of machine operators are interrupted at least 20 times during a workday to walk and fetch or dispose of wipers.
  • 74 per cent of machine operators take more wipers than needed for the task to avoid having to walk and fetch more each time.
  • 69 per cent of machine operators get stressed if they are interrupted in their work when they have a lot to do.
  • 90 per cent of machine operators say that if they were provided with professional industrial wipers close-by, it would help their workplace organization and work satisfaction.[1]

Overall, the research shows that if the placement of wipers is not optimized, it can cause stress and interruptions among manufacturers and their employees. However, it can be difficult to place wipers at the workstation because manufacturing environments are varied, and as a result, it can be challenging to find a solution that fits for every company. Tork Performance® dispensers are designed with a range of unique and flexible mounting options, which allows them to be placed where they are needed the most – within reach of the machine operator. This design feature effectively removes the root cause of the motion and inventory waste shown by the study.

In addition, Tork developed the Tork Motion Waste Calculator to help manufacturers reduce waste. This free web-based tool will allow companies to get a quick understanding of how much the placement of dispensers really impacts the daily work of operators.
