A hauler flipped off a narrow road at the top of a tailings dam when delivering rocks for berm construction

COCHRANE, Ont.—Toronto-based mining firm Detour Gold Corp. has been fined $70,000 for a workplace accident that critically injured a worker.

The incident took place at the Detour Lake Gold mine northeast of Cochrane, Ont. in August 2014 and involved a truck sliding off a narrow road and flipping onto its roof.

According to the province’s Ministry of Labour, the worker was hauling rock to an area at the top of a tailings dam. The rock was being used to build a berm along the side of the narrow road, but at the time of the accident there was no barrier separating the road from the drop-off.

In heavy fog at about 4 a.m., the worker reversed the truck too close to the edge and the road gave way beneath it. The truck fell and flipped onto its roof, critically injuring for the worker.
