Truck sales boost new vehicle purchases says StatsCan

OTTAWA‑Rising truck sales helped the number of new vehicle sales rise 0.3 per cent in November 2010 says Statistics Canada. Preliminary industry data shows, however, that sales fell in December by about five per cent.

Truck sales (including minivans, SUV’s, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses) increased 1.2 per cent in November, reaching 75,916 new sales, somewhat offsetting October’s decline.

Passenger cars, however, declined 0.8 per cent after two months of steady increases. StatsCan says a two per cent decrease in North-American built cars may be partially offset by the 0.8 per cent increase in sales of foreign-built cars.

Seven provinces saw increased new vehicle sales in November, with the largest increase in Alberta.
