Canadian infrastructure firm wins "significant" piece of $125 million project

MONTREAL—SNC-Lavalin Inc. has won a contract to oversee a significant expansion project at a natural gas storage site on the U.S. West Coast.

Awarded by Portland utility Northwest Natural Gas Co., the Canadian engineering and construction company will be responsible for building a 20-kilometre pipeline, a compressor station and several other pieces of associated infrastructure. The pipeline will connect to an underground reservoir in Mist, Ore.—northwest of Portland—which can store up to 71 million cubic metres of natural gas.

The expansion project is designed to provide nearby generating plants operated by another local utility access to no-notice natural gas storage.

SNC did not release the value of the contract, but said it makes up a “significant portion” of the overall US$125 million project.
