Canada's first all-EV taxi service will give Montrealers chance to go green

MONTREAL—A fleet of 50 all-electric taxis are about to hit the streets of Montreal.

Designed to transform the Montreal taxi industry, Taxelco will launch Canada’s first fleet of electric taxis Nov. 26, a project known as Téo.

“With Téo, we plan to show that a green project can be economically, socially and environmentally beneficial, while respecting all regulations,”said Alexandre Taillefer, managing partner of XPND Capital, the firm that founded Taxelco earlier this year. “In launching this service, we’re doing our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and we’re raising the visibility of Montreal, which today joins the select club of cities with an electric taxi service.”

The project is supported by investments the company says will ultimately reach close to $250 million.

Téo will have two tiers of service: Téo Taxi and the elite, Téo Black. For the regular service the company has secured a fleet of green and white Nissan Leaf, Tesla and Kia Soul vehicles. Téo Black will operate a range of luxurious Teslas.

“The two services will meet Montrealers’ different transportation needs,” Marc Petit, CEO of Taxelco, said. “Téo Taxi offers a unique and highly personalized service that encourages interaction between the driver and customer. Téo Black caters mainly to a business clientele, with competitive pricing that will make it a popular service across the city.”

The company’s service will launch initially as a pilot before becoming “a part of daily life in Montreal” in March of next year.
