SNC awarded contract for SaskPower’s Island Falls rehabilitation project

MONTREAL—SNC-Lavalin has secured the contract to rehabilitate SaskPower’s Island Falls Powerhouse in Saskatchewan.

SNC-Lavalin said it will design, provide contract management support and oversee the repairs to the facility’s Island Falls Powerhouse, as well as its Main Dam and A-Dam. The work will be divided into eight phases, spanning a four-and-a-half-year period between 2015 and 2019.

“SaskPower is one of SNC-Lavalin’s long-time clients,” Marie-Claude Dumas, executive vice-president of Hydro at SNC, said. “Our Hydro team is very pleased for the opportunity to work with them on this rehabilitation project.”

Island Falls is a hydroelectric generating facility consisting of seven units, ranging in capacity from 13.2 megawatts to 18 megawatts. It is located approximately 15 kilometres from Sandy Bay, Sask.

“Our extensive experience in rehabilitation projects, particularly those affected by concrete strength and differential movement within existing concrete structures, positions us well to address SaskPower’s objectives for this powerhouse,” Sandy Taylor, president of Power at SNC, said. “Building a strong relationship with the community will allow us to use more local resources, creating jobs and improving the socioeconomic situation of those living in and around the area.”

SNC said it will work with SaskPower to establish the most suitable framework for Aboriginal subcontractor participation.
