About 30,000 workers in Ontario could strike after labour deal

TORONTO—Thousands of Ontario Loblaws workers are preparing to strike after union members voted to reject a tentative memorandum of agreement between the union and the company.

UFCW Canada Local 1000A said that the final percentages will be provided early this week once all segregated ballots have been considered, but the fact the tentative agreement was rejected won’t change.

“Your union is ramping up strike preparations,” the union said in a statement.

The union has called up picket captains for training and has informed the Canadian and international branches of the union that it has commenced strike preparations. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union represents approximately 1.3 million workers in numerous areas, food packaging and grocery retail among them, across the U.S. and Canada. UFCW Canada Local 1000A represents about 30,000 workers at locations across Ontario.

The union also said it will seek to return to the negotiating table.
