Ratification vote set for Sept. 12; could bring two-month strike at light rail plant in northern Ontario to an end
THUNDER BAY, Ont.—The union representing hundreds of striking workers at the Bombardier Inc. light rail plant in Thunder Bay, Ont., says it has reached tentative agreement with the company on a new contract.
Unifor says the tentative deal will be presented for ratification Sept. 12, potentially bringing an end to a strike that began on July 14.
Details of the new collective agreement were not immediately available.
The 900 members of Unifor Local 1075 rejected last month an apparent “last offer” from the company by 80 per cent in a vote ordered by the Ontario Ministry of Labour after an application from Bombardier, the union said.
Workers at the Bombardier plant build the new subway and streetcars for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), as well as cars for the GO train commuter train service.
The plant won the TTC contract under a Buy Ontario policy that the union helped secure.
