Canadian firm to supply oil-water separators for Panama Canal expansion

OTTAWA—Ottawa-based cleantech firm BluMetric Environmental Inc. has won a US$720,000 deal to install six oil-water separators at the Panama Canal.

According to BluMetric, the contract with Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) and the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) is a follow-on deal to the one it signed for the installation of eight wastewater treatment units for the lock houses on the 77-kilometre shipping canal.

That deal was worth US$2.35 million.

“Repeat business from long-standing customers is both one of BluMetric’s business strategies and a sustaining feature of the company,” BluMetric chief executive Roger Woeller said in a press release.

“Our water division is positioning itself on the international stage by developing unique opportunities as well as driving repeat business in a growing sector.”

GUPC is the main contractor in charge of design and construction of the third set of locks on the Panama Canal, the main project of massive expansion program currently underway on the shipping lane that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in Central America.

The oil-water separators will be delivered in stages through the first half of the 2015 fiscal year, according to BluMetric.
