Volt will carry MSRP of $36,895 when it hits Canadian showrooms; price reduction of $5,105

OSHAWA, Ont.—GM Canada announced it is shaving about $5,000 off the price of its Chevrolet Volt in a bid to pick up the electric car’s tepid sales pace since its 2011 launch north of the border.

According to the automaker, the 2014 Volt will carry an MSRP of $36,895 when it hits Canadian showrooms, a price reduction of $5,105 off the current sticker price of $42,000.

The announcement comes a week after Chevrolet announced a 13 per cent price drop for customers in the United States, with the Volt coming with a starting price of $34,995 there.

“The lower price and cost savings offers Canadians the opportunity to own a Volt with an unmatched balance of technology, capability and cost of ownership,” John Roth, vice-president of sales, service and marketing for Chevrolet in Canada, said in a statement.

Customers in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia who qualify for provincial grants could shave another $5,000 to $8,231 off the cost of the plug-in car, bringing the price down to a shade over $28,600.
