New Flyer lands contract extension, will build 95 more hybrid buses for Washington, D.C.

Buses to be built in Winnipeg, Crookston, Minn., delivered by early 2013

Winnipeg—The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has placed an order with Canadian busmaker New Flyer Industries Inc., for 95 hybrid diesel-electric buses.

According to New Flyer, the order is for 95 Xcelsior XDE40 heavy-duty 40-foot buses, and is an option under 2011 deal for 152 of the hybrid people movers.

Slated for assembly at New Flyer’s Winnipeg and Crookston, Minn., facilities over the next seven months, all buses are expected to be delivered before February 2013.

Once delivered, approximately 64 per cent of the WMATA bus fleet will have been built by New Flyer.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
