Worker dies at Halifax shipyard, struck by equipment

Investigators from the province's Labour Department have been called in.

Police confirmed on Feb. 20 that the man who died on Feb. 19 at the Irving Halifax Shipyard was struck by a piece of equipment.

Halifax Regional Police issued a statement saying the death was reported at 11:40 a.m. from the sprawling shipyard on the city’s waterfront.

The 43-year-old worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say their investigation is still in its early stages.

Meanwhile, investigators from the province’s Labour Department have been called in.

Unifor, the union that represents 1,100 workers at the shipyard, says it is also trying to determine what happened.
