Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell says the explosion occurred at Siltech, a company that makes silicone products.

The explosion triggered a small fire that officials say has now been extinguished.

Police say that roads and railways in the area have been shut down.

Powell says light smoke was visible when firefighters first arrived, and then encountered heavy smoke inside the plant.

“This is a sad day,” he said.
