Labrador community reeling after only employer closes

Mayor Wendy Quinlan said it looks like the plant may never open again.
BLACK TICKLE, N.L.—The residents of Black Tickle, Labrador are worried about the future of their remote community now that its only employer is shutting down.
Labrador Sea Products confirmed it will not be reopening its crab plant this year.
The closure will affect just about every person in the coastal community, she said.
Mayor Wendy Quinlan said that if the company knew it wouldn’t be opening again, it should have said so last fall when people had an opportunity to leave to find work.
The coastal boat service doesn’t resume until June, and the sea ice is too poor to cross on snowmobile.
