$20-million tunnel to be built at B.C. Canadian Forces Base

Part of plans to consolidate the Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton at CFB Esquimalt
Esquimalt, B.C.—Victoria-based builder Scansa Construction Ltd. has been awarded a $19.7-million contract for the construction of a utility corridor at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay made the announcement as his department continues to roll out plans to consolidate the Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (FMF CB) at CFB Esquimalt on the country’s west coast.
The corridor will provide new underground routing for mechanical, electrical and telecommunications services at the dockyard at CFB Esquimalt, according to the Department of National Defence.
The project will create about 106 jobs.
The corridor is part of the five-phased FMF CB project, a project that will consolidate and modernize the Department of National Defence ship maintenance facilities at Her Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard Esquimalt.
Originally announced in 2009, the project includes the construction of three new industrial-support buildings, as well as renovation work on the two existing modern industrial buildings, extensive upgrading of the dockyard’s utility services and general site improvements.
The corridor project will proceed in several steps and is currently scheduled to be completed by October 2013, with an anticipated completion date of 2018 for the entire FMF CB project.
