TORONTO—The Canadian company best known for its Hatchimal toys that stormed into stores last Christmas has disclosed a new acquisition of a U.S.-based puzzle maker.

Spin Master Corp. announced Dec. 1 it has purchased the rights to the Perplexus brand for US$9 million, its latest foray into the fast-growing game and puzzle business. The Toronto-based company has been in charge of distributing the Perplexus line since 2013, but will now take full control of the global rights to the brand.

Perplexus is a complex re-imagining of a two-dimensional ball-in-a-maze game. It includes intricate obstacles inside a range of plastic spheres, forcing players to work their way through a 3D maze. Michael McGinnis co-invented the toy alongside Klitsner Industrial Design Group of San Francisco in 2001.

After going public in 2015, Spin Master has acquired a number of similar brands, including the rights to the iconic Etch A Sketch toy and board game maker Marbles.
