Feds to invest $34.4M in Via Rail infrastructure in Ontario and Quebec

Fund will help rail operator upgrade heating and electrical systems in stations and maintenance facilities
OTTAWA—Via Rail’s passengers in Ontario and Quebec may begin noticing some improvements at a number of aging train stations along the Windsor-Quebec City corridor.
The federal government has announced $34.4 million in funding for Via Rail to carry out a range of repairs and upgrades at stations and railyards in Canada’s two most populous provinces.
Covering platform work, heating and ventilation upgrades and mechanical and electrical system improvements at stations along the route, the government said the investments will improve Via service.
The infrastructure dollars will also go toward similar upgrades at the crown corporation’s rail maintenance facilities in Ontario and Quebec.
The Canadian government plans to invest $444.9 million in Via through the 2016-2017 fiscal year, up from $395 million in 2015-2016.
