Refinery’s closure not expected to impact Canada’s propane supply

HALIFAX—The Canadian Propane Association says the pending closure of the Imperial Oil refinery in Halifax isn’t expected to have a serious effect on the country’s propane supply.
The organization says the refinery makes up less than one per cent of Canada’s supply, adding that word of the closure did not come as a surprise.
Imperial announced last week that the refinery will be converted to a terminal.
The conversion is planned for the third or fourth quarter of this year, depending on the progress of the modifications needed.
Once completed, the terminal operation will continue to supply existing terminals in Sydney, N.S., Corner Brook, N.L., Sept-Iles, Que. and Cap aux Meules in the Magdalen Islands.
Located on the Dartmouth side of Halifax harbour, the refinery’s smokestack has been a familiar part of the waterfront for 95 years.
