WINNIPEG—BC Transit has awarded a contract to New Flyer Industries Inc. for 50 of its 40-foot Xcelsior compressed natural gas (CNG) heavy-duty buses.

The contract involves a firm order for 25 with options for an additional 25 buses. Production is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013 and delivered in the first quarter of 2014. The value of the deal was not provided.

“Our last project with BC Transit was for hydrogen fuel cell buses in 2009,” said Paul Soubry, president and CEO of New Flyer. “Not only is this the first time we will build our Xcelsior model for BC Transit, it’s also the first CNG bus we have ever built for them.”

New Flyer built 316 buses for BC Transit between 1992 and 2009. The new Xcelsior buses will be added to BC Transit’s fleet in Nanaimo.
