Governments, businesses, and consumers alike are increasingly adopting LED lights because of their long lifespan, energy-efficient properties, and declining costs. The advantages of LED technology over traditional lighting technologies are why the global LED market is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 18 percent, reaching $43 billion by 20211. But for manufacturers to fully reap the benefits of this booming market, they’ll need to consider working closely with a leading, innovative third-party provider in testing and certification to produce and sell high-quality products. This is especially true for manufacturers of white light LEDs. CSA Group can help.
Drawbacks of traditional testing systems
The most popular way to produce white light LEDs involves converting shorter-wavelength blue LED light into longer wavelengths by employing the fluorescent properties of a phosphor compound. It’s a complicated process that makes it difficult to test and measure LED phosphor lens materials independent of the LED itself. Traditional testing systems involve irradiating the phosphor with the LED for an extended period of time, but the effects of aging on the LED can skew phosphor measurement. Fortunately, there’s a solution.
CSA Group’s innovative and precise testing solution
CSA Group was the first to develop and offer a total fluorescence efficiency test specifically geared for the characterization of phosphor lens materials completely independent of an LED. The bi-spectral fluorescence colorimeter (BFC) phosphor test uses a sample of LED phosphor lens material and characterizes it, providing the user with a completely independent spectral profile spanning the visual frequency range. BFC phosphor testing can also be used for opaque or transparent non-fluorescent materials for total reflectivity and transmissivity.
BFC testing is flexible and can be used for a variety of light sources, but more importantly, it produces precise results, helping manufacturers to design and sell superior products for the market.
The lighting team at CSA Group is ready to help you improve the precision of remote phosphor testing and accurately model real-world lumen and color maintenance performance. Contact CSA Group to learn more.
