The most popular way to produce white light LEDs involves converting shorter-wavelength blue LED light into longer wavelengths by employing the fluorescent properties of a phosphor compound. It’s a complicated process that makes it difficult to test and measure LED phosphor lens materials independent of the LED itself. Traditional testing systems involve irradiating the phosphor with the LED for an extended period of time, but the effects of aging on the LED can skew phosphor measurement. The bi-spectral fluorescence colorimeter (BFC) phosphor test uses a sample of LED phosphor lens material and characterizes it, providing the user with a completely independent spectral profile spanning the visual frequency range. BFC phosphor testing can also be used for opaque or transparent non-fluorescent materials for total reflectivity and transmissivity.
