Consumers are looking to manufacturers and service providers to provide objective, verifiable environmental information for their products or services in order to help them make direct, informed comparisons with competing products.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are one way that this information can be communicated over a product’s life cycle.
EPDs showcase the sustainability of your product to customers in your supply chain. They’re easily-understood public statements of your products’ environmental impact delivered in a consistent format.
They’re created through the application of Product Category Rules (PCRs) that outline the requirements for Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) which, in turn, evaluate the environmental impacts of a product at specified points along the supply chain.
Based on international standards and guidelines, PCRs are developed through an open, transparent collaboration between industry professionals, life-cycle experts and public stakeholders. They enable you to create EPDs that disclose your product’s environmental impact across a range of variables, including carbon footprint and energy usage. EPDs can help recognize environmentally-responsible manufacturers and suppliers, and provide valuable information so buyers can make informed decisions.
CSA Group is leveraging its international experience in developing environmental and sustainability standards to become an official program operator for developing PCRs and registering EPDs.
CSA Group’s PCR and EPD programs follow established best practices as set out by ISO 14025. We are also a member of the PCR Guidance Development Initiative and work with other program operators to ensure PCRs are developed in a consistent fashion.
