TORONTO—Geotab, an Oakville, Ont.-based IoT and connected transportation company, has acquired Waterloo’s FleetCarma, a firm that has developed a telematics technology platform that monitors and models electric vehicle use.

Geotab says the acquisition of FleetCarma accelerates its long-standing commitment to becoming a global leader in telematics for EVs.

“Geotab’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and innovation is further amplified by the acquisition of FleetCarma,” said Neil Cawse, CEO, Geotab. “We are excited to expand our presence in the EV space and offer our current and future customers a reliable telematics solution to help meet their changing business and fleet needs.”

“With this acquisition, Geotab is now strongly positioned to help accelerate the uptake and EV infrastructure planning amongst both fleets and communities around the world,” Cawse added.

Geotab’s technology connects commercial vehicles to the Internet and provides web-based analytics to help customers better manage fleets.

The firm says it leverages data analytics and machine learning to help customers improve productivity, optimize fleets through the reduction of fuel consumption, enhance driver safety, and achieve strong compliance to regulatory changes

“Combining FleetCarma’s unique EV telematics capabilities with Geotab’s proven open-platform solution is exactly what our customers want and the industry needs,” said Matt Stevens, CEO of FleetCarma. “Together, as we continue to drive electric vehicle adoption, we will provide a complete solution that will not only benefit customers, but society as well.”

FleetCarma collects data on EV power usage, which helps utility companies understand and manage the impact EV charging has on the electric grid.

The firm also provides fleet management software for EVs. It has customers in North America and Europe, including electric utilities, municipal and federal governments, military and commercial fleets, and transportation research labs.

FleetCarma won an Ontario Export Award in 2017 for excellence in the Transportation Equipment field
