Six men face 63 charges in robbery of truck with $7M of cargo
Suspects held a delivery truck driver at gunpoint before driving the truck to an industrial plaza to transfer the cargo of cellphones and tablets into their own vehicle
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Six men are facing dozens of charges for allegedly robbing a delivery truck loaded with nearly $7 million of electronics in March, police west of Toronto announced Wednesday.
The incident happened March 13 in Brampton, Ont., when two of the accused allegedly forced a delivery truck to stop and held the driver at gunpoint, Peel Regional Police said in a statement.
The two suspects then drove the truck to a nearby industrial plaza, where they shifted its cargo of cellphones and tablets into their own vehicle and drove off, acting Det. Stephen Sherwin said at a news conference.
Four of the suspects were eventually caught in August when they allegedly tried to rob a warehouse and multiple trucks; the remaining two suspects were arrested in a separate incident in September, Sherwin said.
The six suspects, between the ages of 45 and 75, face 63 charges in the case, including robbery, kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle, and use of both an imitation firearm and a real firearm while committing an offence.
The accused appeared in court in Brampton throughout August and September, police said.
Sherwin said co-operation between police departments in Halton Region and Barrie, Ont., as well as the Canada Border Services Agency, was instrumental in making arrests in the case.
Police said it’s possible the accused have been involved in similar incidents in the past, noting all six have ties to communities throughout western and eastern Canada.
Sherwin said the investigation is ongoing, and police have not made any connections between the group and gangs or organized crime.
