Worker found dead after being reported missing at facility near Fort McMurray, Alta., Jan. 19

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta.—A Suncor Energy worker was found dead at the company’s oil sands operation north of Fort McMurray, Alta., in northeastern Alberta.

The energy company said its internal emergency services personnel responded to the scene after an employee was reported missing around 7 a.m. Jan. 19.

Local RCMP and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety were notified, and the worker was located a few hours later and declared dead at the scene.

According to local media reports, a 40-year-old male was found dead in a sand dump area used for tailings ponds.

Suncor said the employee’s immediate family were notified.

It said no other employees were involved in the incident.

The company said it is working with authorities and will complete a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
