Work halted to investigate leach area after pipe damage last week

TORONTO—Barrick Gold Corp. says operations at its Veladero mine in Argentina have been temporarily suspended pending inspections of the mine’s heap leach area.

The company said a pipe carrying process solution in the heap leach area was damaged last week and a small amount of solution left the leach pad when it was struck by a large block of ice. It added that the accident did not pose a threat to its employees or the environment.

Barrick said it will work with authorities to confirm the integrity and safety of the heap leach facility.

The company did not anticipate any material impact to Veladero’s operating guidance for 2016.
