Refinery officials don't believe the "oily product" had been leaking into the water long before it was discovered

COME BY CHANCE, N.L.—Officials at Newfoundland’s Come by Chance oil refinery are investigating the cause of a leak into Placentia Bay this week.

Jamie Beach, the refinery’s vice-president of health, safety and the environment, says they don’t believe the “oily product” had been leaking into the water long before it was discovered.

The company says the spill was discovered Jan. 4 by an operations team at the dock, which found a broken section of pipeline and immediately deployed a containment boom.

Officials with Eastern Canada Response Corporation are in the area trying to contain and clean up the oil on the shore.

High winds hampered efforts on Wednesday to clean up the shoreline near Bordeaux, about six kilometres southwest of the refinery.

Beach says the oil found near Bordeaux is no longer in the water.
