Production to resume at fire-damaged Tecumseh, Ont., food plant

Damage pegged at about $40 million after July 18 fire at Bonduelle Canada plant in Tecumseh, Ont.
TECUMSEH, Ont.—Production is set to resume at a vegetable processing plant in Tecumseh, Ont., east of Windsor, after a multimillion-dollar fire at the facility.
Tecumseh mayor Gary McNamara says the plant’s owner, Bonduelle Canada Inc., has managed to get its equipment back up and running after the July 18 fire.
McNamara says the company brought in its sanitation crew and skilled trades workers to clean and test the equipment, adding it was even running beans on the line July 20 in order to test everything.
Damage has been pegged at about $40 million but there were no injuries.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has completed its on-scene investigation but there’s no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
Bonduelle said last week an electrical cause was suspected.
The fire led to a state of emergency and an evacuation order in the town, but both were lifted hours later.
The plant employs about 650 permanent and seasonal workers.
