New contract option contributes to strong few weeks at Winnipeg-based manufacturer

WINNIPEG—The U.S. arm of Canadian bus manufacturer New Flyer Industries Inc. has won an order to build 23 more buses for the transit authority in Columbia, South Carolina, known as The Comet.

The order includes 15 35-foot Xcelsior buses and eight 40-foot models, adding to existing an order with the East Coast transit provider. New Flyer did not disclose the value of the contact options.

The fresh order follows a strong few weeks for the Canadian bus maker. At the end of October it restarted production at its Pembina, North Dakota plant after a funding shortfall in New Jersey’s transit department put a major order in jeopardy. Meanwhile, a Conference Board of Canada report noted the company’s strong order backlog is likely to help fuel economic growth in Winnipeg over the next two years.

The company’s share are up more than 10 per cent since the beginning of November.
