Crews battled the blaze into the early evening on Tuesday at a plastics factory on the southwest corner of the city.
Thick black smoke could be seen for dozens of kilometres, including across the river in Detroit.
Plastic barrels began to burn and it spread to a building housing tonnes of plastic.

Nearby residents were told to “shelter in place” and keep windows closed.
