OTTAWA — Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra announced the launch of a new request for proposal to support the development of propulsion improving devices, specifically aimed at reducing underwater noise generated by propellers.

The implementation of devices like ducts, fins, rudders or propeller caps on a vessel can optimize the flow of water across the propeller to help reduce underwater noise.

The federal government says it will fund these projects through Transport Canada’s Quiet Vessel Initiative, which is testing various technologies, vessel designs, retrofits and operational practices to make vessels quieter and helping to reduce the impacts of underwater noise on marine animals.

The deadline for bid submissions is July 28, and all projects must be completed by March 31, 2024.

“Our government continues to invest in the development of innovative technologies which will not only help grow Canadian research and technology development, but which will greatly benefit our iconic and endangered whales from coast-to-coast-to-coast. I’m excited to see what technological advancements Canadian expertise will develop,” said Alghabra in a statement.
