Is the current government's approach to trade deals a help or a hindrance?

TORONTO – In an exclusive interview with CanadianManufacturing.com, Hon. John Manley, Chair of CIBC and former Deputy Prime Minister, shares his views on USMCA (United States-Canada-Mexico Accord) and the way forward for exporting companies.

Manley says that 75 per cent of Canada’s exports went to the U.S. even before it had the Canada-U.S. free-trade agreement and will continue to do so in coming years.

In general, trade agreements help because they produce a degree of certainty and provide rules, says Manley. Companies of all sizes should manage risk through diversification, he says.
