MDA wins $1M in contracts to monitor surface changes in mines

Company's RADARSAT-2 will be used to detect surface deformation in and around mining operations
RICHMOND, B.C.—MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) has won contracts worth more than $1-million to implement its satellite radar technology to detect surface changes around mines.
The contracts, awarded by a pair of undisclosed international mining firms, will see MDA apply its RADARSAT-2 geospatial technology to monitor surface deformation in and around mining operations.
According to MDA, the RADARSAT-2 technology can detect even the most subtle surface changes, allowing remedial action to take place before safety issues arise.
MDA said it will also provide analytical reports that will give a historical snapshot of mine site.
The RADARSAT-2 satellite collects data regardless of light or weather condition, provides frequent re-visit imaging options and is supported by ground receiving stations that provide near real-time information delivery services.
