DETROIT—Cadillac has unveiled its first-ever extended-range electric vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The luxury brand launched the much-anticipated 2014 ELR, which showcases parent company General Motors’ EREV technology with its T-shaped, 16.5-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack and 1.4-litre gasoline-powered electric generator capable of 154 kilowatts (kW) of total system power.
GM estimates the ELR has a range of approximately 56 kilometres using only the energy stored in the battery pack, and a range of approximately 480 kilometres when combining pure electric and generator-assisted driving.
The automaker says the luxury coupe can be completely recharged in as little as 4.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet.
The ELR will be manufactured at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, the world’s only automotive manufacturing facility that mass-produces extended-range electric vehicles.
Pricing for the ELR was not immediately available.
Production is scheduled to begin in late 2013, with sales starting in early 2014 in North America.
