TORONTO—GFL Environmental Inc. is expanding its reach in Western Canada with the acquisition of a solid waste company that operates in B.C.’s lower mainland.

The Toronto-headquartered company said March 1 it has purchased Smithrite Disposal and Carney’s Waste Systems for an undisclosed price.

Based in Coquitlam, B.C., the company employs more than 300 workers and has been in business since 1947. Along with solid waste collection, it offers recyclable and organic food waste pick-up, hauling and processing services to municipal, commercial and industrial clients.

GFL says the B.C. firm’s operations will complement its existing footprint in the province.
