Institute released report in 2011 detailing 19 steps it says need to be taken
CALGARY—An environmental policy research group says Alberta’s oilsands industry has made only limited progress on reducing the impacts of its development over the past couple of years.
In 2011, the Pembina Institute released a report detailing 19 steps that it says need to be taken toward responsible oilsands development.
But policy director Simon Dyer says substantial progress has only been made in two areas, with moderate progress in five others.
Dyer says the industry is doing a better job with conservation and biodiversity monitoring.
He says the problem areas are a failure to protect the Athabasca River and wetlands, incomplete plans to protect the Woodland Caribou and a lack of new projects to implement carbon capture.
He says international coverage of the oilsands will continue to be largely negative until government and the industry deals with its problem areas.
