CCEMC shortlists 55 projects in $35M carbon use challenge

EDMONTON—More than four dozen projects from around the globe have been shortlisted as part of a $35-million carbon utilization challenge.
According to the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corp. (CCEMC), an Alberta-based not-for-profit, 55 projects have been shortlisted for the first round of its Grand Challenge, a competition seeking out new products and markets for the utilization and conversion of carbon emissions.
“The CCEMC is pleased with the excellent submissions that we have shortlisted,” CCEMC chair Eric Newell said in a release.
In total, the organization received 344 applications from around the world.
“The response demonstrates that there is potential for exciting breakthrough carbon utilization technologies that can be developed and commercialized,” Newell said.
The shortlisted projects include chemical synthesis, carbonate production, liquid fuels, bacteria bio-fixation, methanol production, solid carbon products, polymer processing, syngas production, fertilizer production, algae bio-fixation and water treatment, according to the CCEMC.
Project proprietors will now be invited to complete full proposals, which will be vetted by a team of experts, before the winners are announced April 15, 2014, at the Zero2014 conference in Edmonton.

The second round of the CCEMC’s Grand Challenge will be open for submissions in March 2015.
