Canadian industrial executives are increasingly attuned to the energy efficiency of their operations, shop floor machinery and office equipment. Conservation projects such as lighting retrofits, motor and compressor upgrades and green building systems are amounting to real cost savings and sustainability gains—spurring ongoing interest in formal energy management programs.

A 2015 survey of 500 industrial businesses by CanadianManufacturing.com, for instance, found more than half of respondents feel the energy management strategy at their organization provides a competitive advantage.

In terms of target areas these executives are focusing on for energy reductions, electricity usage ranked number one at 54 percent. Energy-efficient lighting was identified as a top area of focus by 40 percent of respondents, followed by natural gas (28 percent), water usage (26 percent), more efficient vehicles and fleets (24 percent) and more efficient machinery and equipment (21 percent).

Other areas cited by respondents included high-efficiency building systems, variable frequency drives and energy meters.

Clearly, businesses in Canada are growing ever more motivated to discover and install energy-efficient products and systems. Before investing in upgrades and alternative technologies, these buyers seek assurance of performance and compliance with regulations.
