BERLIN, Germany: The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has upped its order of rail cars from Bombardier Transportation.

Originally 10 pilot cars were ordered, with options for more. The initial 10 cars are scheduled to be delivered in 2015.

Now, with the announcement today that BART has confirmed an order for 150 additional cars, the total order has risen to 410 rail cars. The total value of the order is $921 million (US$897 million), with the 150 cars representing $274 million (US$266 million) of that total. The remaining 400 cars, which are going to be build in Plattsburgh, New York, are expected to be delivered between 2017 and 2020.

BART intends to use the cars to replace its entire existing fleet and to expand its system.
