Washington transit operator exercises fresh options on 2013 contract, brings total order to 500 buses

WINNIPEG—New Flyer Industries Inc. has won an order for 100 new buses from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

Awarded to the Canadian manufacturer’s American subsidiary, the order is worth approximately US$56 million and is part of a contract signed in 2013.

The new options include 100 40-foot Xcelsior buses designed to run on compressed natural gas. New Flyer’s total order from the Capital Region transit provider, meanwhile, rises to 500 buses—329 of which have already been delivered.

“With over 1,200 buses delivered to WMATA since 2002, New Flyer is thrilled to continue our relationship with WMATA and be a partner they can continue to rely on,” Paul Soubry, the company’s president and CEO, said in a statement.
